Keryn’s Journey: Defying the Odds with Determination

We recently interviewed Keryn, a long term and well-known client at GMobility, whose journey of resilience, resolve, and self-belief is nothing short of extraordinary. In 1996, Keryn emerged from a two-year coma—a state doctors believed she’d never recover from. Her family was advised to place her in a nursing home and move on, but Keryn, with her supportive family, refused to accept that fate. “I didn’t believe them, and I proved them wrong,” Keryn recalls, crediting her recovery to “pig-headed determination” and a positive mindset. Today, she embraces independence with the help of a powered wheelchair, staying active through her passion for bodybuilding, and defying expectations at every step.

Living Independently with the Help of a Powered Wheelchair

Keryn’s powered wheelchair has been instrumental in her fight towards independence, enabling her to navigate her community and stay active. “It allows me to be more active and engage in my passion,” she shares. Her wheelchair not only grants her freedom but also the opportunity to chase goals that many would find challenging under any circumstances.

Keryn uses the Permobil F5 Corpus VS Standing Powered Wheelchair, which allows her to choose between standing and sitting while she moves. This flexibility provides her with important health benefits, like better circulation and pressure relief, while also giving her added comfort and safety for daily activities.

Pushing Limits and Inspiring Others

Keryn’s active lifestyle has become a source of inspiration to everyone around her. Whether it’s her regular workouts or her unyielding dedication to bodybuilding, she continues to push herself to achieve more. Her motivation comes from the thrill of consistent progress, a bit of “bragging rights,” and, most importantly, the impact her story has on others. Keryn’s commitment to fitness speaks volumes about her fortitude and resolve, reminding those around her that limitations are often just stepping stones to greater achievements.

Unwavering Resolve and Support

Keryn’s path has been filled with challenges; each one met with her characteristic resolve. “What haven’t I faced?” she says with humour and humility. Through every high and low, her strength and positive attitude have been her anchors. This mindset, she explains, has been essential to overcoming each hurdle. Alongside her strength, Keryn credits the unwavering support of her family, friends, and dedicated professionals for her resilience. “With the support of my family, friends, and some professional supports, I have been able to overcome the expectations once put on me,” she says, grateful for the acceptance and encouragement she’s received.

A Life Full of Adventures and Future Goals

Keryn’s life since her ABI (Acquired Brain Injury) has been filled with adventures that many only dreams of. From skydiving, parasailing, and snow skiing, to riding an elephant and surfing in the ocean, she has never let her disability define her limits.

In recent years, Keryn continues to set new goals. Despite setbacks like a broken foot and the challenges of lockdowns, she remains focused on her dream of competing in a bench press competition later this year.

Through her story, Keryn hopes to convey that disabled people can still have goals and surpass limitations. She invites everyone to follow her journey on Instagram at @keryn_try_and_stop_me, where she continues to inspire others by setting and smashing her goals.

Keryn’s story is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit and the impact that the right support, equipment, and determination can have on one’s life. Her journey is far from over, and she continues to prove that with the right mindset, anything is possible.
